18 Years Ago, Rory Gilmore Debuted Blunt Bangs


Gilmore Girls, aka everyone’s favorite comfort show, is beloved for its sharp dialogue, early 2000s fashion, and over-the-top coffee jokes. But what is not given enough attention is the transformation of the hair. Rory Gilmour was constantly changing her look, alternating between long and short hair, even going through a bob phase at one point in the series. But her most polarizing and underrated hairstyle didn’t come until Season 6.

When Gilmore Girls First aired back in 2000, Rory was only 16. As a high school kid in that era, she wasn’t getting up at 5 a.m. to perform an elaborate get-ready routine à la Cassie. Excitement, Rory in season 1 and season 2 had more straight hair with a middle-part kind of girl. She occasionally wore a headband, especially when she started attending her private school, Chilton. She also wore heavy glares for prom, as early teens were used to doing.

Both Rory and her mom Lorelai kept things casual in the early days of living life in their quaint Connecticut town. When big local events include breakfast for dinner, a 24-hour dance-a-thon, or a day spring fling festival, Low Pony is the way to go. The only time they’ll attempt curls or updos? For dinner at Emily Gilmore’s house, apparently.

Once Season 3 rolls around and Rory gets closer to graduation, that’s when she starts to spice things up Layers and Highlights – probably to show the audience that she is growing up. This is after Rory had a summer internship in Washington DC and started the process of applying to Harvard and Yale, so it makes sense why she would have a more sophisticated style to match.

In Season 4, Rory marks the beginning of college with Bob, as well as breaking up with her high school boyfriend, Jess. By Season 5, her hair has evolved into a long lob. but it wasn’t until season 6 that Real The standout that graced our screens: Rory’s blunt bangs.

In a totally relatable move, Rory has faced a lot of problems in life and quickly reacted by getting bangs. It all went down in Season 6, which premiered on September 15, 2005 — a whole 18 years ago. Rory’s look instantly went from small town girl to Ivy League, and it was so refreshing.

The straight-edge fringe was a contrast to her usual soft curls. While certainly stylish, especially for 2005, the look was classy in a way that helped work with the DAR, aka the fancy job provided by her grandmother. It was giving country club with a twist.
